City Reign - "See What It's Worth"

In Their Words:

"This is probably our most out-and-out rock tune so far, it opens with this guitar riff and then just crashes straight through the song in no time. It’s really just channel for all the frustration of being young and having to work a crap job you don’t care about just to keep your head above water when all you really wanna do is play guitar and write songs all day. It’s probably the lyrically accessible and relatable song we’ve done.

The video was shot down in Brighton with 4Eyes and that was a lot of fun. We tried to make it as interesting as it can be with four guys standing in a dark room playing a song. There’s a lot of eyeballing which some people have found a bit eery but I think the whole thing works pretty well."

Glass Caves - "Summer Lover Ep"

Leeds outfit Glass Caves are no doubt one of the most exciting up-and-coming bands on the UK scene. Hailing from the North of England, which gave the world Arctic Monkeys among the many, Glass Caves are continuing to establish this area of the UK as the well of talents.
Glass Caves’ have never done music things in an ordinary way. They started making name for themselves by busking on the streets of Yorkshire towns and managed to build quite a big following by doing so. While originally Glass Caves’ idea was to earn some money for recording their songs, the creative band got much more out of this simple thing: they not only had a great chance to connect with people by means of music, but also on a personal level. By making busking a big part of their band’s life, Glass Caves also highlighted their individuality: there are not so many bands nowadays who build their following and get more polished as a live band playing on the streets.
Glass Caves’ debut self-titled EP was released at the beginning of 2013 and, with good and solid basis laid by playing live a lot, the record pushed the collective right into the loving embrace of eager music fans. In the follow-up to the release, Glass Caves appeared at several festivals including the mighty Reading & Leeds and played quite a few packed headline shows.

Right at the beginning of December 2013, Glass Caves are making an early Christmas present for their fans and are releasing their sophomore EP ‘Summer Lover’. Elevating and with a hint of spacious transparency, the rhythms are lively, dynamic and appealing. Title track ‘Summer Lover’ has a breezy, summery feel about it, while ‘Throw Down The Pistol’ is more edgy and sharper. ‘This Road’ carries its air of freedom with dignity and ‘Safety Man’ takes a softer route with several explosions along the way.
‘Summer Lover’ EP is a catchy and brisk affair with the four songs vividly displaying the versatile character of the record and thus Glass Caves themselves. The sound the band present on the EP is fresh and refreshing to hear on the music scene of today. It’s crisp and clearly crafted with elegant shapes and turns, upbeat rhythms and a distinct British stamp of the Glass Caves’ personality on it. As it’s the case with the collective, they put all their passion and soul into creating music they love, so it’s only natural that this genuine feeling shows in their songs and makes it a very pleasant listen to say the least.

The Bank Trail - "Lake Michigan"

I'm always keen to hear new Lake Michigan songs and this tape gives me that with the added chance to check out The Bank Trail for the first time. They are a good match for Lake Michigan being sparse and acoustic and the first song is good but then "Wildcard" turns up the sadness in the vocals, the slow guitar picking and the lyrics - it's quite a gem. There is also a Nirvana cover - "Pennyroyal Tea". This time there are some additional keys and vocals but it remains sparse and similarly downbeat whilst bringing a haunting feel to the song. It steers clear of the more desperate sounding vocals in the original version. Lake Michigan also serve up two new tracks and a cover. The new ones are both slow and atmospheric particularly the aptly named second track, "Mid", which features some hugely understated and barely audible vocals alongside Chris Marks' trademark lo-fi fingerpicked guitar. The last song is a Desire cover. I'm not familiar with the original but the sound here fits in well with the rest of Lake Michigan's output. This is a cool split. The Bank Trail are definitely worth looking up if you like Lake Michigan and they have a few other tracks on their Bandcamp page. I hear it’s cold and snowing back home right now - this tape is ideal for some warmth on those cold, wintry late nights.

Face The King - "The Sound"

Opening with You, Me & The Sound there is an immediate sense of urgency that rolls out of the speakers as Face The King sit in territory which will be familiar to those who know the band as they deliver a powerful crescendo of sounds wrapped inside a fine threaded case.

Following with All The Pretty Things, which although containing all the big stadium effects to be expected, has a more tender feeling to it as the emotive context of the lyric is given room to express the sentiments. The overall impact is a more considered sound which floats the instruments around the vocal.
Next is The Stage an intriguing diversion and finds Face The King in an atmospheric space in which the material is tempered to allow the music create a dreamlike state of mind in which the listener can loosen their thoughts on a superb five minute track. My pick of the release as this demonstrates a broader capability and scope than is
Concluding with The Science Apart which incorporates the big stadium rock and the more considered approach of the previous two tracks perhaps indicates where we can expect Face The King to direct their travel in the future.
The Sound serves as a great staging post for the current thinking of the quartet and the LP should have some significant additions if this is anything to go by.
